Here are the latest New York taxi fares, taking an NYC taxi is easy...
A NYC taxi and the New York taxi fares are one of the better big city bargains anywhere with the ride costing just over two dollars per mile. With most NYC taxi rides averaging about 4 or 5 miles in Manhattan, ten dollars will get you there conveniently right to your destination. And if there are three or four of you in your group, the cost becomes even a better deal. Rides can be paid for in either US cash or with a credit/debit card as of January, 2008. Here are the latest New York taxi fares. Once the meter is placed in the 'hired' position, the beginning charge is $2.50 + .50 = $3.00 in the daytime, $3.50 at night between the hours of 8PM and 6AM and $4.00 during the weekday rush hours of 4PM to 8PM. Additional charges will be $0.40 per 1/5 mile which equals four short blocks in Manhattan when the NYC taxi is traveling at 12 mph or faster. As of November 1, 2009, the $.50 that is added to each ride is the New York state surcharge tax on each ride that is part of the MTA rescue package designed to create about $85 million dollars in revenue each year. Traveling at a speed under 12 mph or waiting will result in the meter charging at a rate of $0.40 each minute. The charge is the same for one, two, three or four passengers and a fifth passenger can be taken if they are a child under the age of seven. No additional charge will be made for luggage. Tolls at water crossings are the responsibility of the passenger and your driver is obligated to tell you about the toll amount before the trip begins. The NYC taxi driver is also required to use the electronic E-Z Pass in all of the five New York City boroughs which is discounted from the cash toll amounts (the five boroughs are Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island). The 2010 EZ Pass toll amounts are $4.57 for the Queens Midtown Tunnel and the RFK TriBoro Bridge, for example. Besides the regular meter New York taxi fares, other types of trips have the following fare structure: JFK/Manhattan/JFK - rides from Manhattan to JFK or from JFK to anywhere in Manhattan are $45 flat rate plus any toll and the night/rush hour surcharges do not apply. The 50 cent tax will be added. If there is more than one stop at the end of this kind of ride, then the driver would put the meter on after the first stop and the meter charge would be paid at the last stop in addition to the $45 flat rate. Newark Airport - trips from any of the five NYC boroughs to Newark Airport are meter charges to the airport plus a $15 dollar return surcharge plus round trip tolls. A ride from midtown Manhattan will be about $40 to $45 on the meter plus $15 return surcharge plus $8-$9 tolls, not including any tip for the driver. Westchester and Nassau Counties - trips to the adjoining counties of Westchester and Nassau counties in a NYC taxi are charged at the rate of the meter to the NYC city limit plus double the meter from the city limit on to the destination plus necessary round trip tolls. Drivers are not required to take passengers to Newark Airport, Westchester or Nassau counties if they have been driving longer than 8 hours. A ride to any place other than the 5 boroughs, Newark Airport and Westchester/Nassau counties is optional for the driver and the New York taxi fare would be a flat rate agreed upon by the driver and passenger. In addition, the driver is required to enter the flat rate price into the meter plus necessary round trip tolls are the passenger's responsibility. Group Rides - during the hours of 8 to 10 AM, Monday - Friday, at the southeast corner of York Avenue and 79th Street in Manhattan, four passengers can share a NYC taxi cab for a ride to anywhere in the downtown financial district of Manhattan for $5 each person. As of 2010, there are group rides available weekdays from 6 to 10AM at 3rd Avenue/72nd Street and Columbus Avenue/72nd Street to anywhere along Park Avenue down to 42nd Street for $4 per person. And from 8th Avenue/57th Street, a group ride to Park Avenue down to 42nd Street is $3 per person.
