Portugal travel means visiting the westernmost country in continental Europe that is located on the Iberian peninsula. Travel in Portugal will have the traveler near Spain to the north and the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Mediteranean Sea to the south. Portugal has two archipelagos, Madeira and the Azores Islands.

Lisbon is home to about a million and a half people. The Alfama neighborhood near Lisbon's center has hilly, winding narrow streets that were built centuries ago. Near Lisbon one can find Belem, one of the most important towns for Portuguese history as well as Portuguese navigation. Many of Portugal's best known explorers have come from this area. The Tower of Belem in particular is an old historical site that shows different information about the famous explorers and navigators of both Portugal and Spain.

A few miles from Lisbon, one can find the Castle of Sintra that has been transformed into a world heritage site because of its historical and touristic importance. Sintra's palaces and beautiful gardens will entertain you for hours and you may not want to leave.

To the north of Lisbon, the Douro Valley is one of the most important wine regions in the world as well as a popular area for visitors. The Douro region is the 2,000 year old wine producing region where Port wine and Douro wine are made.

The Alentejo region of Portugal is known as the agricultural region where Portugal's food is grown. One can find some of the best of Portuguese culture as well as low priced restaurants with great food and inexpensive accommodations.
